OzHarvest began with a simple concept to rescue good food that would otherwise go to waste and deliver it to people in need.
Project implemented: 2004
To create a world free of food waste and without hunger
OzHarvest’s work in Australia tackles the $20 billion issue of food waste and food insecurity which 3.6 million Australians experience each year.
OzHarvest is Australia’s leading food rescue operation feeding people in need in Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane, Cairns, Canberra, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Newcastle, Perth and in regional communities across the country. Since 2004, OzHarvest has delivered over 93 million meals and has saved more than 32,000 tonnes of food from ending up as landfill.
OzHarvest rescues more than 180 tonnes of quality surplus food every week from more than 3,500 businesses including supermarkets, restaurants, cafes, hotels, retailers, airports and food outlets. And delivers it to more than 1300 charities, making a positive difference to the lives of men, women and children who now have access to a wider supply and variety of fresh and cooked food.
The for-impact organisation provides nutrition education to vulnerable communities and hospitality training to disadvantaged youth, playing a critical role in breaking the cycle of inter-generational poverty.
Ronni’s journey tackling global food waste is the subject of an independent film Food Fighter, released in June 2018. OzHarvest introduced a new impact campaign #fightfoodwaste to support the film and inspire consumers to reduce food waste at home. Join the movement at fightfoodwaste.org
