The project provided critical resources to residents of Kangaroo Island to support recovery in the wake of Australia’s 2019-2020 bushfires.

Project implemented: January 2020

Project goal

To avoid the entrenched disadvantage that a natural disaster can cause in a vulnerable community.

delivering on

why is this project important?

The community resilience, and partnerships, shown in this case highlight a model that may assist future natural disaster recovery efforts.

Key steps to make it happen

1Gain Support

Junction worked with the Kangaroo Island community to identify needs and facilitate partnerships to deliver.

2Immediate Action

The locals needed support straight away, so handing out fuel and gift cards within the first few weeks was a top priority.

impact to date

$15,000 donated
$15,000 worth of fuel and gift cards were given to locals to provide immediate useful and tangible aid.
$3,000 from Junction
Junction alone raised more than $3,000 in gift cards to help replace items lost in the fire.
$50 for every $40
OTR has pledged to donate $50 for every $40 fuel card bought.

  1. The fuel card campaign project was one of Junction’s first steps to help Kangaroo Island locals affected by the bushfires. Junction’s support will continue and grow in impact as the community begins towards long-term recovery.
  2. Junction’s Community Centre in Kangaroo Island has become a focal point for the bushfire recovery services, offering safety, support, food, and supplies. “we are a resilient and beautiful community who will get through this” Junction KI Co-ordinator, Maree Baldwin said.
  3. Junction has been a vital link to connect volunteers and the needs of the community, providing volunteers with guidance on how best to help those affected.
  4. “We are so pleased to be able to support the community on Kangaroo Island in any way we can at OTR. Thank you to the amazing team at Junction and all their supporters who have jumped on board, to make sure these fuel vouchers are going directly into the hands of those who need it this week. A heart-warming demonstration of community spirit amid these devastating bushfires”, Joann Skene, Head of Community Partnerships, OTR.

The bushfire season of 2020 was the most catastrophic recorded in the history of Kangaroo Island, South Australia. In early January, a third of the Island was on fire. Houses and farmlands were destroyed; many people faced homelessness and were grieving the loss of loved ones and their livelihood. Junction responded by co-ordinating donations, volunteers, emergency accommodation, and childcare services for over 110 people. Junction facilitated the broader community’s desire to help, identifying critical resources that were required, and initiating partnerships to deliver. Fuel cards emerged as a need, as “a result of the distances people have to travel across the Island, many families are under pressure for fuel,” CEO, Maria Palumbo explains. Two fuel retailers on the Island (OTR and Caltex) stepped in to provide and encourage donations. Within a week, over $15,000 in fuel cards were donated and placed in the hands of locals – providing the tangible assistance required. “We are heartbroken, but we will get through this” – Junction KI Co-ordinator, Maree Baldwin shares.
