A major road infrastructure project that features two nine kilometre tunnels linking two major motorways in Northern Sydney, NSW. The project's design and construction (and operations in the future) incorporate a number of significant sustainability achievements.
Project implemented: Construction started in June 2015
To create a sector-specific sustainability exemplar
Seeks to set a new standard for sustainability performance in major road tunnel projects
The ‘NCXHub’ training facility has been established to increase the skills of the existing project workforce, provide opportunities for young people, disadvantaged and underrepresented groups and to ensure workers from Western Sydney and the NSW Central Coast are targeted for training and employment to help address the state’s skill’s shortages. NCXHub provides a one-stop learning shop in a range of areas including literacy, numeracy, information technology, construction skills and leadership.
The project is forecast to transport at least 50 per cent of the heavy vehicles currently using a major arterial road in Sydney’s North, removing around 5000 trucks per day. Construction of NorthConnex is well underway and it is expected to open in 2019.
The project received a ‘Leading’ design rating (the highest possible rating) from the Infrastructure Sustainability Council of Australia’s (ISCA) under the Infrastructure Sustainability (IS) rating scheme.
