delivering on

why is this project important?

Reducing salt intake by 3 grams a day in Victoria could lead to 787 fewer deaths & savings of 50 million a year

Key steps to make it happen

1Build strong partnerships

Create a plan to ensure reduced salt intake by 30% by 2025 in Victoria. Develop a collaborative approach with stakeholders.

2Increase public awareness

Stronger awareness of recommended salt intake, current salt intake, dietary sources of salt & ways to reduce consumption

3Strengthen healthy policy

Ensure that policies supporting a healthier food supply are established, resourced, monitored and reported on

4Develop industry approach

Support food manufacturers in food reformulation approaches & labeling programs. Promote low salt practices in food service.

5Monitoring and evaluation

Establish & resource regular monitoring systems to understand salt intake, & measure progress towards salt reduction targets

Australians are eating too much salt. High salt intake contributes to high blood pressure, increasing the risk of heart attack and stroke, and can put stress on the kidneys, increasing the risk of kidney disease and kidney failure. These conditions have both a human toll, and a considerable impact on the health system. As the majority of salt in the Australian diet is found in processed foods, the Partnership is a collaborative, system-wide to transform public health outcomes. It combines raising consumer awareness through the successful ‘Unpack the Salt’ campaign; working with food manufacturers to support innovation and reformulation; and advocating for strengthened policy initiatives.
