Sodexo uses various approaches to tackling the issue of food waste, including:

  • Their innovative DRIVE menu management system, which aims to avoid the creation of food waste through site forecasting, menu planning, creative use of leftovers, and pre-prepared foods
  • Implementing the WasteWatch x LeanPath program, which can reduce food waste by 45% in 2-6 months
  • Focusing on education and awareness of the issue for suppliers, employees, clients and consumers, through various events, training, information and displays
  • Utilising new technologies for treatment of unavoidable food waste.

In Australia alone, it is estimated that Sodexo’s recently-introduced Single-Use Plastics Reduction Plan will eliminate millions of pieces of unnecessary single use items; including diverting more than 3 million single use plastic bags, over 5 million single use plastic containers, and over 3 million disposable coffee cups from going into landfill.

Better Tomorrow 2025 consists of nine commitments which were developed directly in accordance with the Sustainable Development Goals. Nine objectives and measurable outcomes are used to track progress on a range of sustainability goals.

Sodexo is the recognised global sustainability leader in their market sector, being recognised as the Dow Jones Sustainability Index and RobecoSAM gold class leader in their industry for 14 consecutive years.

The key focus areas are:

  • Fighting hunger & malnutrition
  • Working for gender equality
  • Reducing waste
  • Boosting Indigenous employment, engagement and reconciliation
  • Improving mental health.

In regards to Indigenous peoples, Sodexo’s commitment is to make a real difference in the communities where they work to ensure inter-generational change. Sodexo first introduced a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) in 2011, and has recently released their fifth RAP 2019-2021, which is their second RAP at the highest level of Elevate, and is also a partner of the Australian Government’s Employment Parity Initiative.
