#SeaToSource is an initiative powered by Conservation Volunteers Australia, supporting you to take action on one of the world’s most solvable environmental issues – ocean litter.

Project implemented: June 2020

Project goal

Build a movement of everyday Australians who are connected to, and actively care for their local waterways and are educated about the primary causes of marine debris / ocean litter.

delivering on

why is this project important?

#SeaToSource aims to educate and activate people around the ocean litter challenge, and then address the causes at the source – in our homes, towns and cities where it begins.

Key steps to make it happen

1Engage communities

We engage people around Australia through social media, interest groups, and local promotion, to prepare for action.

2Beach Clean Events

We run flagship cleanup events at our 8 River locations in order to connect people and educate them about the problem.

3Source Reduction Workshop

We run workshops in our 8 River locations to bring together people to identify and target ocean litter based on local data.

4Online Resources & Apps

We share online resources & apps to assist people to take self-guided actions to tackle ocean litter in their local areas.

5Innovation Challenges

We run design and innovation challenges with community, business and government partners to develop new approaches

6Storytelling & Community

Change is sustained through the stories we tell ourselves as a society, and relationships between us. We nurture both.

Macro-plastic Monitoring Sites

Increase participation in data collection through the LitterStopper App (which will be used for source reduction workshops)

Increased connection with waterways, and education about the species which live there. (Pro-environmental behaviour)

We’re committed to reducing the amount of plastic litter entering our creeks, rivers and oceans and causing harm to the animals and humans that call these places home.

#SeaToSource initially focuses on 8 waterways, most of which flow into The Great Southern Reef – a huge series of connected reefs that extend around Australia’s coastline, from Moreton Bay, Queensland to Kalbarri in Western Australia. The Great Southern Reef is home to a wide variety of plants and animals found nowhere else on the planet.

#SeaToSource supports existing projects and initiatives, and launches new actions on the ocean litter issues that matter to communities to tackle the source of litter. It starts with each of us, and our relationship to our waterways and oceans, but together we’ll also head upstream, running design and innovation challenges to support you and your community to find ways to stop litter at its source.
