A globally unique system that provides researchers with access to high value data for monitoring and evaluating Australia’s progress towards the SDGs

Project implemented: Ongoing

Project goal

To source high value data for research and monitoring Australia’s progress towards the SDGs.

delivering on

why is this project important?

Data is at the centre of how we understand and plan our human settlements, and AURIN makes this findable and accessible for all

Key steps to make it happen

1Engage Users

Identify relevant datasets for researchers to monitor progress towards the SDGs

2Source Data

Engage with data providers, negotiating data, licensing and user access

3Data Curation/Metadata

Process all data into a common, research-ready spatial format with high quality metadata

4Data Release / Monitoring

Release data through AURIN’s services, monitoring connections and reporting on use

5Promotion and Training

Connect with the broader community to promote AURIN data for us in monitoring the SDGs

6Feedback to Users

Re-engage the user base to ensure that data meets their requirements, identifying and overcoming gaps as required

Promotion of open data movement

Promotion of nationally consistent spatio-temporal data relevant to human settlements

Promotion of high quality metadata standards

AURIN works with researchers to identify the datasets they need to monitor and evaluate Australia’s human settlements progress towards the SDGs, we  then source and curate required datasets from areas  as broad as  health, urban form, socio-economics, education, agriculture, employment and food supply. These data sets are all spatially enabled and research ready, meaning that users can determine where in Australia more work needs to be done to achieve the SDGs. AURIN works to provide each of the datasets with high quality metadata (information about the datasets), allowing users to determine which SDG indicator the datasets relate to.

Wherever possible, the datasets are released through the Open Data (Creative Commons) framework, to ensure that everyone from individual citizens to governments can evaluate our progress in achieving the SDGs. Examples of work researchers have undertaken using AURIN data and analytical tools can be found at www.aurin.org.au/case-studies
